Artificial grass for children - playgrounds, gardens and safe surfaces
Children's safety during play starts with the surface they run, jump and fall on. Parents who are considering artificial grass for the garden, a playground or a terrace often ask themselves: is this solution truly safe for children? Is the material harmless? Does the soft turf cushion falls? Can a child play on it all day without risk? In this article we answer those questions and show how to choose artificial grass that will give your child a safe, comfortable and attractive place to play.

Why Does the Surface Under a Child's Feet Matter So Much?

Children run, jump, fall over and get back up - it is their natural activity, essential for healthy physical and psychological development. It is the job of adults to create a space where that activity is possible without excessive risk of injury.

A hard surface - concrete, block paving, ceramic tiles - is convenient for adults but unforgiving for children who fall. A fall onto concrete can end in a serious head injury or a fractured wrist. A soft, impact-absorbing surface reduces the force of impact in a fall and lowers the risk of serious injury.

Landscape artificial grass, particularly with a suitable impact-absorbing underlay, offers a softness comparable to natural grass - and natural grass has always been the most natural surface for children to play on. Synthetic turf does, however, have one important advantage over natural grass: it does not create mud, has none of the unevenness caused by roots and stones, and is uniform across its entire surface.

Chemical Safety - What Is Artificial Grass Made Of?

The first concern parents usually have about artificial grass is its chemical composition - is the material safe for a child who spends time on it, touches it and occasionally puts a hand to their mouth? This is a completely legitimate concern that deserves a straightforward answer.

Good-quality landscape artificial grass is made from polyethylene (PE) fibres - a material used, among other things, in food packaging, baby bottles and medical equipment. PE is one of the safest plastics in terms of human contact. The backing is typically made from latex or polyurethane - materials widely used in children's products.

The EN 71 certificate is the European safety standard for toys and children's products; when awarded to artificial grass, it confirms the absence of heavy metals, phthalates, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and other toxic substances. The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certificate is additional confirmation of chemical safety. When buying artificial grass for children, always check that the product holds these certificates.

Avoid products with no certification documentation and those with a suspiciously low price - cheap synthetic turf of unknown origin may contain harmful substances that have not been tested by an accredited laboratory.

Impact Absorption - Does Artificial Grass Protect Against Falls?

The impact-absorbing properties of artificial grass depend on the pile height, the density of the turf and - most importantly - the underlay used.

Artificial grass without an underlay, laid directly on hard concrete or compacted soil, has limited impact-absorbing properties. The grass fibres have a degree of resilience, but they cannot replace a layer designed to absorb the energy of an impact.

For domestic gardens and home playgrounds it is worth using artificial grass with a foam or rubber underlay - a two-layer system that provides far better cushioning than the turf alone. A PU foam underlay 15-20 mm thick beneath synthetic turf can have a certified Critical Fall Height (CFH) of 0.6-1.0 m - meaning it protects a child in a fall from up to one metre.

For professional playgrounds with taller equipment - swings above 1 m, slides - a thicker impact-absorbing layer and an EN 1177 certificate are required, as we described in detail in our article on artificial grass in nurseries and preschools.

Artificial Grass in the Domestic Garden - a Safe Space for Children

A garden with artificial grass is one of the most child-friendly solutions a parent can create. A uniform, soft, always-green surface free of stones, roots, unevenness and mud is the ideal environment for active outdoor play.

Artificial grass for the garden eliminates several hazards typical of a natural lawn. There are no mosquitoes or wasps living in the soil. There are no ticks, which on natural grass are a genuine danger. There are no dog droppings trodden into the turf, because artificial grass is easy to clean - waste is removed mechanically and the surface is washed with water.

The absence of pesticides and herbicides is a further advantage for environmentally conscious parents. A natural lawn requires regular fertilising and weed control - the chemicals used in these processes can be harmful to children playing close to the ground. Landscape artificial grass requires no chemicals of any kind.

Artificial Grass on a Home Playground - Practical Tips

If you are planning to create a home playground with artificial grass, a few practical tips will help you choose the right solution and avoid typical mistakes.

Match the system thickness to the planned equipment. Low equipment for small children - a sandpit, a low slide up to 60 cm, a climbing frame - requires less cushioning depth than swings and slides for older children. Consult your supplier, giving the maximum height of the equipment, and you will receive a recommendation for the right product.

Choose turf with the EN 71 and Oeko-Tex certificates - chemical safety is the priority. Also check that the product has a certified drainage rate - after rain, children head out to the playground faster than adults expect.

Make sure the subfloor is properly prepared - geotextile membrane to prevent weed growth and a drainage layer of sand or aggregate. Weeds pushing through the turf are both an aesthetic problem and potential trip hazards for children.

Go for colour - artificial grass for children's gardens is available in versions with coloured elements, or you can complement the green turf with coloured EPDM tiles that define play zones, incorporate educational elements (numbers, letters) or simply look cheerful and encourage activity.

Artificial Grass and Dogs and Other Pets

Many parents have both children and dogs - and wonder whether artificial grass is a good solution for both. The answer is yes - but with a few important points to bear in mind.

Dogs are very happy on artificial grass - the soft surface is comfortable for them and the green turf satisfies their need for contact with a "grassy" surface. Dog urine does not damage artificial grass the way it damages natural grass - there are no characteristic yellow patches. The surface is washed with a garden hose, which removes both the smell and bacteria.

Dog faeces should be removed mechanically and the spot rinsed with water and disinfectant - exactly the same as with natural grass, but easier because there is no risk of it being trodden into the soil. Regular clearing up after the dog is the condition for keeping the surface clean and safe for playing children.

The Temperature of Artificial Grass in Summer - What You Should Know

One matter deserves an honest discussion: the surface temperature of artificial grass in full sun on hot summer days. Synthetic turf heats up in direct sunlight more than natural grass - because it lacks the transpiration mechanism that cools a natural surface.

In practice this means that on a hot, sunny day the surface temperature of artificial grass can be noticeably higher than the surrounding air temperature. For children playing barefoot this can be uncomfortable. The solution is to water the turf before play - a few minutes with a garden hose cools the surface immediately and the effect lasts for some time.

In shaded parts of the garden the problem does not arise - artificial grass in the shade stays at a comfortable temperature even on hot days. This is one reason why, when planning a garden for children, it is worth including a shelter or trees that provide shade.

Summary

Artificial grass for children - whether in a domestic garden, on a terrace or on a playground - is safe, comfortable and practical, provided you choose a certified product and have it installed correctly. EN 71 and Oeko-Tex certificates guarantee chemical safety. The right impact-absorbing underlay protects against falls. Synthetic turf does not create mud, is easy to clean and holds its appearance through years of intensive children's play. For parents who want to create a safe, green space for children without daily maintenance - artificial grass for the garden is a solution that will meet your expectations.
